The Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services (Doctor) is the first Brazilian federal agency to commit to the Global Compact to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (ODS) United Nations.
At an event on Wednesday (20) Minister Marcos Jorge de Lima made official the portfolio's adhesion to the Brazil Network of the Global Compact. The ceremony in Brasília was attended by the vice president of Rede Brasil, Christian Brito, of the executive secretary, Carlo Pereira, and representatives of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Luciana Aguiar and Maristela Baioni.
The ministry and executive secretary of Rede Brasil do Global Compact already have a work plan to provide more services to the private sector, such as training workshops for small and medium-sized companies on the implementation of the SDGs.
Rede Brasil would work on projects and ministry coordinators that align with the SDGs 6 (Clean water and sanitation), ODS 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), ODS 12 (Sustainable Production and Consumption) e ODS 13 (climate action). Within these spaces, the Global Compact will encourage stakeholder engagement and advance in achieving these goals.
To Carlo Pereira, the adhesion of the ministry to the pact is more than natural. With direct work in industry and commerce, the agency's agendas are in line with the objective of the United Nations initiative to focus on working with companies.
According to the minister, sustainability is a topic of the greatest relevance on the global agenda and of great concern to the ministry and to the Brazilian industrial sector, for its direct impact on competitiveness.
