Bonsucro: What were the main changes in the chain of custody pattern?

Bonsucro certification promises to reach new markets in a sustainable way.

O Bonsucro it's a global initiative, non-profit, dedicated to reducing the environmental and social impacts of sugarcane production and with the participation of different stakeholders. Its objective is to ensure that current and future production of sugarcane and all its by-products are produced sustainably.

It was created in June of 2010 and has two nomenclatures. Bonsucro and Bonsucro EU with the parameters for serving the European market. Both aim to achieve the mission of outlining and organizing the definition processes, by multiple stakeholders, of the sustainable production of sugarcane and all its by-products (that is, "Development of a Standard") and ensuring the integrity of your implementation (that is, "Certification").

The Bonsucro Certification System

The certification system is based on 3 pillars:

  1. Compliance with standards (Chain of Custody and Production)
  2. Compliance with the Audit Guide
  3. certification protocol

Chronology and main changes

since its origin, bonsucro has undergone changes in its standardization and understanding of good cane production practices in a sustainable manner, aiming at the continuous improvement of the integration of processes from producers to the industrial processes that the raw material undergoes.

Thus generating countless bioproducts, like biofuels. Consequently, no year of 2021 the bonsucro EU standard has been undergoing specific changes, totaling approximately 12 modifications.

The new scope of the Bonsucro EU -RED standard outlines that:

It is recommended to include "Biomass fuel". Biomass Fuel: gaseous and liquid fuels produced from biomass in the understanding of the standard.

Some residues are not included in the scope of the new standard, with the exception of bagasse and products derived from bagasse.

Furthermore, the document brings changes to the nomenclature of the forest area, the recommendation of an expert in the assessment of areas of high biodiversity in pasture areas, a new methodology for measuring GHG in forest lands with 10 a 30% of the canopy area.

The changes also mention about the peat locations that suffered drainage beyond what is allowed until 2008, in this new publication it is considered a violation of the compliance requirements to the certification regulation.

There are also greater specifics regarding the products meeting the demands of RED II in the production area, gas emissions and volume balancing in stock situation.

Finally, it is highlighted that the options for the criterion of greenhouse gases for biofuels, Bioliquids and Biomass Fuels (supply chain operators) underwent significant changes to the calculation methodology. There are now independent features for each bio. Emphasizing that now operators will have to develop their own tool based on the GHG methodologies in annex I.

The changes are countless, however, they are easy to achieve since the producer and everyone involved in the chain already follow good manufacturing practices and the chain of custody standards recommended by the program. Continuing the adequacy of certification adds value to the end-to-end product.
