in Piauí, report points out challenges for sustainable development

Identify, through a database and indicators, the main challenges of Piauí for the implementation of the Agenda 2030 this is what is proposed in the “Diagnosis of Piauí in the Light of Sustainable Development Goals (ODS)”, presented in Teresina last month.

Result of the "ODS Piauí Project", partnership between the state government, Contour Global, National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) and United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the diagnosis will serve to measure the progress of specific goals of the Agenda 2030.

The document, presented to members of the state government, mayors and civil society representatives during a seminar on sustainable territorial development and Agenda 2030, highlights numbers on poverty, education, income, genre, access to clean water and information on inequalities.

With the diagnosis, state public agencies, Private sector and civil society organizations will be able to identify local priorities and direct policies focused on achieving the SDG targets.

The document will be updated annually, taking into account the particularities of each of the 12 state territories. Through the project, specific diagnoses will be produced for each territory. Last week, UNDP presented the first local diagnosis, of the Itaim River Valley.

Representing the governor of Piauí, Wellington Days, the secretary of state planning, Antônio Neto, said that the commitment to the implementation of the Agenda 2030 will bring positive results in all 12 territories in the region.

“Piauí is committed to implementing the Sustainable Development Goals. We incorporate Agenda 2030 as a planning and articulation instrument, and all these actions will impact the quality of life of Piauí. The diagnosis is one of the ways to accelerate territorial development, in a balanced way and in line with the SDGs", said Antônio Neto.

During the event, The “MAPS” mission report was also delivered to the local authorities, who visited Piauí this year to identify challenges and opportunities for the state's development and accelerate progress and the achievement of sustainable development. The mission involved representatives from UNDP and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (FIDA).

UNDP Senior Advisor, Haroldo Machado Filho, who delivered the report, highlighted the commitment of the government of Piauí to improve development indicators, as the Human Development Index.

“The MAPS mission was fundamental for us to identify joint opportunities to accelerate the development of Piauí and its territories. With this methodology, it will be possible to increase local resilience, inclusion and productivity. These factors are fundamental for the state's territories", said Haroldo Machado Filho.
