Global leaders call for more speed and urgency in climate adaptation solutions

Following a series of climate disasters related to global warming that affected countries around the world, the new Global Adaptation Commission was launched. This unprecedented union of global leaders comes to catalyze a worldwide movement to scale and speed up climate change adaptation solutions. The Global Adaptation Commission is led by Ban Ki-moon, 8º Secretary-General of the United Nations, Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill Foundation & Melinda Gates, and Kristalina Georgieva, CEO of the World Bank. she is born with 17 partner countries and 28 commissioned, representing all regions of the globe and all sectors of development and industry.

Adaptation is about managing the risks associated with climate change – from floods and droughts to rising sea levels and storms.. As indicated in the Special Report on Global Warming of 1,5 ° C of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the harmful impacts of climate change are being felt now, much earlier and more powerfully than anticipated. The Commission's work will raise the visibility and political importance of climate adaptation and encourage bold solutions, like smarter investments, new technologies and better planning to become more resilient to climate-related threats.

"Without urgent adaptation action, we put food safety at risk, energy and water in the coming decades. Continued economic growth and global poverty reduction are possible despite these daunting challenges – but only if societies invest much more in adaptation.. Adaptation costs are less than the cost of doing business as usual, that is, without taking climate change into account. And the benefits are many times greater", declared Ban Ki-moon, 8º Secretary-General of the United Nations.
"We are at a time of high risk and great promise. We need policies to help vulnerable populations adapt, and we need to ensure that governments and other stakeholders support innovation and help deliver these advances to the people and places that need them most.”, disse Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill Foundation & Melinda Gates. "If everyone does their part, we can reduce carbon emissions, increase access to affordable energy and help farmers everywhere grow more productive crops”.

"Our climate has already changed. Dramatic weather events and volatile seasons are the new normal”, disse Kristalina Georgieva, CEO of the World Bank. “Millions of people in poor countries are already living with the effects of climate change. It is a cruel irony that those who have contributed least to climate change are those who are affected and least able to prepare.. we face a choice: business as usual and hope for the best. Or we act now and build for a resilient future".

Cora Van Nieuwenhuizen, Netherlands Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management and New Commissioner, he said: “We are here to begin to change the course of history and secure the future of our global societies. Climate change affects us all. We cannot wait for measures to combat climate change to take effect.”

There are four main obstacles slowing down adaptation that the Commission will work to address.:
1. Decision makers and the general public are still not aware of all the opportunities to be gained by becoming more resilient and less vulnerable to climate impacts and natural hazards.;
2. Governments and companies do not incorporate climate change risks into their plans and investments in social and economic development;
3. Adaptation efforts fall short of those who need them most, of the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world; e
4. While adaptation is a global challenge, global leadership on the issue is sparse.. In short, the world falls short of the transformation needed to adapt to a changing climate.

in your first year, the Commission will oversee the preparation of a baseline report and present its conclusions and recommendations at the Climate Summit in 2019 of the secretary general of the United Nations. The report will be informed by contributions from the main institutes of scientific analysis, economic and political world; and define why adaptation to climate risks and accelerated action is essential, what new actions are needed and what should be done differently; and how governments, businesses and citizens can start working today to make the world a better and safer place.

The Commission will also convene important advocates, coalitions, private sector and civil society actors to promote activities aligned with various actions, including food security and rural livelihoods., global supply chains, cities, infrastructure, finances, social protection and nature-based solutions.

AGREED COUNTRIES

Countries at the forefront of adaptation took the lead in creating the Global Adaptation Commission. The leaders of these countries are committed to working together to advance the work of the Commission.. These countries include: South Africa, Argentina, Bangladesh, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Denmark, Ethiopia, Germany, Grenada, India, Indonesia, Netherlands, Malaysia, Mexico, United Kingdom, Senegal.

“The costs of adapting to climate change could reach hundreds of billions a year even 2050. We have reached a point where adaptation is in the collective interest, with a strong economic case for action. in the next two years, the Global Adaptation Commission will demonstrate that adapting to climate change is not just essential, but also an opportunity to change the way our societies plan and invest. It will provide the roadmap for what new actions are needed and what must be done differently to ensure more sustainable economic development and security for all.”, said the dr. Patrick Vincent Verkooijen, CEO do Global Center on Adaptation.

“Climate change, once seen as a distant threat in the future, is here now. As the new IPCC report makes clear, without urgent action, climate change will bring devastation to homes, the plantations and people's businesses”, said the dr. Andrew Steer, President and CEO of WRI-World Resources Institute. “This Commission will put adaptation at the center of the development agenda., encouraging governments and businesses to urgently prepare for a changing world.”
