Event highlights the importance of innovation for sustainable and inclusive development

Innovation and technology are allied tools in defining public policies and can help countries achieve a more inclusive and sustainable development, in the assessment of United Nations officials present this wednesday (28) in the assessment of United Nations officials, held at the Museum of Tomorrow, in Rio de Janeiro (RJ).

At the opening of the forum, the assistant secretary general of the UN and director for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Luiz Felipe López-Calva, highlighted the relationship between technology, innovation and sustainable development.

"Innovation is key for countries to advance their economies. We also have the Agenda 2030, a commitment signed by the countries that serves as a guide for us to accelerate the process towards achieving sustainable development. Innovation and technology are allied tools in defining inclusive and sustainable public policies", said the director of UNDP.

The professor at the University of Sussex, Johan Schot, who participated in the opening alongside Luiz Felipe López-Calva, said that technology is a central tool for the fulfillment of 17 Sustainable Development Goals. "We have several challenges to achieve sustainable development, but technology is a strong ally in this process. The SDGs provide a guide for us to develop actions and initiatives that focus on sustainability”.

Resident Coordinator of the UN System in Brazil and Resident Representative of the UNDP in the country, Niky Fabiancic, highlighted that it is necessary to understand the current revolution to design new solutions that collaborate with sustainability and inclusion in different countries.

"We are experiencing the fourth industrial revolution. Business models and traditional production methods are seriously threatened. Artificial intelligence will make companies, cities and health systems, education and food production, goods and services and the labor market change drastically", declared.

"This event seeks to understand advances in research areas and technological innovations for the economic sector, as well as encouraging new social and environmental solutions that help society and that countries are more sustainable and inclusive", completed.

The director of the Global Center for Innovation and Technology in Sustainability, Alice Abreu, he highlighted that the forum is an event for "sharing knowledge and experiences and that there will be discussions and debates that will promote productive meetings for the strengthening of sustainable development".

Director of Scientific Development at the Museum of Tomorrow, Alfredo Tolmasquim said that the theme of innovation and technology is fundamental for the development of the planet. "Climate change is a reality. And if we don't think about innovative solutions, we will suffer the consequences", affirmed.
