ISCC RFNBO and Green Hydrogen – Energy Revolution

With the preconception of the ISCC methodology I in the certification of the Green Hydrogen Plant of the company Grøn BRINT A/S, of Danish, In July this year, certification for renewable fuels of non -biological origin (RFNBOs), Stops widely to become a reality not only in the European Union, But also in the rest of the world. Awaiting official recognition by the Danish agency, All certificates by the ISCC Methodology I, can benefit from the adding of the IScc scope I RFNBO by simple connectivity.

ISCC EU

ISCC I is a widely recognized certification scheme (European Union, 2011) that certifies fuels of biogenic origin ensuring traceability and sustainability for bioenergy, Biomass and Biofuels, respecting the emission levels of the gee defined in the renewable renewable energy directive (I returned). Certification covers the following raw materials and fuels, according to the standard:

  • Agricultural and Forest Biomass, waste and waste (including agricultural waste, aquaculture, fishing and forestry), non -food lignocellulosic and cellulosic materials for the production of biofuels, Bioliquids and Biomass Fuels, including advanced biofuels and biogas for transportation (that is, Biofuels and biogas produced from raw materials listed in part A of Annex IX of RED II) and biofuels, Bioliquids and low -risk biomass fuels or high risk of indirect change of soil use (iLUC).
  • Non -renewable liquid and solid waste flows or residue processing and exhaust gases of non -renewable origin for the production of recycled carbon fuels.
  • Energy derived from different renewable sources of biomass for the production of liquid fuels and renewable gaseous to transport non -biological origin.

Green Hydrogen and Brazil

Green hydrogen is a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, because it is produced without the emission of pollutants. It is obtained mainly through water electrolysis, using electricity generated by renewable sources such as wind and solar.

Green hydrogen production

Green hydrogen production involves water division (H₂O) in hydrogen (H₂) and oxygen (O₂) Using electricity. This process is known as electrolysis and is considered clean because it does not generate greenhouse gas emissions.

Potential use as fuel

Green hydrogen has great potential as fuel for various sectors:

  • Transport: Can be used in internal combustion vehicles and electric vehicles with fuel cells, emitting only water as a byproduct.
  • Industry: Can be used in industrial processes that require large amounts of energy, such as cement production and fertilizers.
  • Energy: Can be stored and used to generate electricity in times of high demand, contributing to the stability of the electrical system.

Brazil has stood out in the development of green hydrogen, with projects in progress in various regions of the country. An example is the Brazil Fortescue Sustainable Industries project LTDA, that aims to create a green hydrogen production hub in Ceará. But we can highlight 3 ongoing initiatives, quite mature:

1. H2 Green Steel e Vale

Vale, One of the largest mining companies in the world, signed an agreement with H2 Green Steel, A Swedish Startup, to develop industrial hubs in Brazil and North America. These industrial hubs will focus on the production of low -carbon steelboard products, like green hydrogen and iron-sponge (HBI). H2 Green Steel will use iron ore briquettes produced by Vale and Electricity of renewable sources for the production of green hydrogen. This project aims to contribute to global decarbonization and promote the low carbon emission industry in Brazil.

2. National Hydrogen Program (PNH2)

The National Hydrogen Program, launched by the Brazilian government, aims to make Brazil an important player in the global hydrogen market. The program aims to foster a low carbon hydrogen industry, using the country's renewable energy matrix. PNH2 is coordinated by the Ministry of Mines and Energy and involves several thematic chambers to discuss specific issues, as a strengthening of the scientific-technological bases, Human Resources Training, energy planning, legal and normative framework, and market development and competitiveness.

3. Braskem and Green Technology

Braskem, one of the largest petrochemicals in Latin America, is investing in green technologies to produce plastics from renewable and biological raw materials. The company is developing projects to produce biopolimals, that are biodegradable and made from renewable resources, like sugarcane. These biopolymers have a significantly lower environmental impact compared to traditional oil -derived plastics.
