Publication stimulates debate on resilient and sustainable urban spaces

To promote debate and understanding of specific topics on the Agenda 2030, the UN System Advisory Group in Brazil, in partnership with UN-HABITAT, released last tuesday (5), in Maceio (AL), O Sustainable Development Goal Glossary 11 – Sustainable cities and communities. The document presents terms and definitions that dialogue with the goals of the SDG 11 and intends to serve as a subsidy for the debate between institutions and individuals about public policies. Resilient and sustainable urban spaces.

The document provides definitions on adequate housing, safe and affordable, safe transport, inclusive urbanization and environmental impact reduction. The publication also highlights concepts on economic relations in urban areas, reduction of environmental impact, municipal waste management, between others.

United Nations experts organized, collaboratively, the definitions and references present in the glossary. Nonetheless, the concepts presented in the publication are intended to be an initial proposition and do not exhaust the themes.

"A Agenda 2030 recognizes the key role of local and regional governments in promoting sustainable development, and this glossary dialogues directly with these spheres for the 'location' of this Agenda”, said the resident coordinator of the UN System in Brazil and resident representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) no country, Niky Fabiancic.

“Localization” refers to both how local and regional governments can support the achievement of the SDGs through “bottom-up” actions., on how the SDGs can provide a framework for a local development policy.

According to the UN-HABITAT national official for Brazil, Rayne Moraes, this was the first glossary released in the Northeast region, recognizing that all cities and urban settlements must be provided with inclusive policies.

Since the entry into force of the Agenda 2030, the UN Advisory Group in Brazil has already launched, in addition to the ODS glossary 11, publications referring to the Sustainable Development Goals 5 (Gender equality), 13 (Action against global climate change), 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure), 6 (Clean water and sanitation) e 7 (Clean and affordable energy).

In the assessment of the UNDP senior advisor and co-chair of the UN Advisory Group in Brazil for the Agenda 2030, Harold Son, presenting the definition of specific terms for each SDG is a fundamental tool for the formulation of public policies with a focus on sustainable development.

"These glossaries are a relevant tool to support the integrated understanding of the Agenda themes 2030. Know the concepts behind the commitment signed by countries at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit, in september 2015, is fundamental to inform policy formulation, in addition to guiding its implementation and monitoring over the next few years", declared.
