The creation of a Brazilian regulatory framework for water involving governments, private sector and civil society is the main recommendation of the final report of the Water Business Day, which condenses the discussions of the event held in March (18) during the activities of World Water Forum, in Brasilia (DF).
The document advocates that the legal scope be built collectively and increase trust between companies and society, valuing this natural resource across the board and encouraging long-term investments.
The text is the result of three workshops held during the event and composed by companies and organizations, also including the main messages left by speakers. Total no, near 250 representatives of the public and private sectors and the third sector participated in the activities throughout the day.
The efforts of the Global Compact Brazil Network, of the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) and the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS), responsible for dialogue between companies, aim to make the Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean water and sanitation) be part of a common language shared between companies and their network of collaborators. The intention is to raise awareness about the use and management of water for all production sectors in the industry.
One of the sectors responsible for the largest consumption of water in the world (20%), the industry was also cited by speakers as part of the solution to water issues.
According to them, companies must increase their awareness of water management for both internal and external operations. During the dynamics within the workshops, future challenges for companies were raised, as well as factors for the development of favorable environments capable of enabling innovative management models.
The discussions went through three thematic axes: Case of Water in Circular Businesses, which outlined barriers and opportunities for the circulation of ideas, proposals and good examples of water management in the private sector; Risks - Measures, Monitoring and Reporting, which explored the indices and instruments used to monitor and report related issues; and Water Management to advance the SDGs and create Shared Value, which sought to understand the role of corporate water management in achieving the SDG 6.
