Seminar debates sustainable energy and compliance with the Paris Agreement

The energy company FURNAS hosted, on the last day 17, a seminar to debate sustainable energy generation with an eye on compliance with the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The event, organized by the company and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), discussed the main advances and challenges of the energy sector, focused on fulfilling the Agenda 2030 and of the 17 ODS.

FURNAS Finance Director, Jenner Guimarães do Rêgo, and the resident coordinator of the UN System and representative of UNDP Brazil, Niky Fabiancic, opened the seminar. Rêgo stated that FURNAS invests to increase the share of renewable sources, like wind and solar energy, in the energy matrix of Brazil, in addition to developing innovative projects.

The first thermochemical plant to generate energy from solid waste, under construction in the interior of Minas Gerais; electric and hybrid hydrogen and ethanol buses; and a plant that harnesses energy from the waves of the sea are among them.

He also stressed that the company's commitment goes beyond energy generation and transmission. "We contribute to the eradication of hunger, generation of employment and income opportunities and with gender equity", explained.

Fabiancic already announced the launch of the “Sustainable Development Goal Terms Glossary 7: Clean and affordable energy". The document, produced by the UN Agenda Advisory Group 2030, with the support of FURNAS, seeks, according to the UNDP representative in Brazil, “a more in-depth discussion of the relationship between production and energy consumption and intends to serve as a subsidy for the debate on public policies, neutrally, between institutions and individuals".

Two panel discussions brought together experts during the event. “I hope that the cooperation between Brazil and other countries, not just from the global south, be increasingly expanded so that the countries of this bloc seek to expand the supply of renewable energy from their matrices", said Fabiancic during the meeting.
