UNDP and Repsol sign global agreement to promote sustainable development

Spanish energy company Repsol and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) signed a global cooperation agreement that will facilitate the advancement of sustainable development in more than 20 countries where both organizations operate. This is the first global agreement between UNDP and an oil and gas company.

The agreement will encourage cooperation in the field of community development and the protection of human rights through initiatives that promote local economic and social progress as well as respect for the environment.. The partnership will strengthen local communities in their efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (ODS).

"We are committed to supporting countries committed to the sustainable use of natural resources, to transform their wealth into sustainable development”, said the director of the Istanbul International Center for the Private Sector for Sustainable Development, of UNDP, Marcos Neto.

“This involves working closely with companies to align their investments with the SDGs. This global partnership with Repsol is an exciting opportunity to do this at scale", added.

“Repsol considers sustainable development one of the company's global objectives., and the cooperation agreement with UNDP demonstrates our high standards.,” declared Repsol's sustainability director, Fernando Ruiz placeholder image.

“With this important partnership with the United Nations, we take a step forward in our commitment to local communities and the environment in the countries where we are present”, completed.

The partnership between Repsol and UNDP has an initial duration of two years and focuses on four areas of work: exchange of information and analysis to identify potential cooperation projects; involvement of community actors in participatory dialogue to define priorities in local development; support for concrete projects that guarantee sustainable development; and sharing knowledge and experiences on how extractive industries can support SDG achievement.

This is not the first time that Repsol and UNDP work in partnership. The two organizations have already developed projects together, as a water access program in La Guajira and a community development initiative in Cartagena (both in Colombia) and an action to support local communities in Libya.

With the signing of the agreement, the basis for cooperation between the two organizations will become global. currently, Repsol and UNDP's international operations have the following countries in common: Algeria, Aruba, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Gabon, Guiana, Indonesia, Iraq, Libya, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela and Vietnam.
