United Nations launch publication in Portuguese on global goal of clean and accessible energy

The Advisory Group of the United Nations System in Brazil for the Agenda 2030 released on the last day 29, World Energy Day, a glossary clarifying terms of the Sustainable Development Goal (ODS) nº 7, about clean and affordable energy. The publication is available online for free.. Document was prepared to inform debates on public policies for the theme.

Definitions and references in the glossary have been collaboratively organized by United Nations experts. The concepts are an initial proposition and do not exhaust the subjects presented. The publication had the support of FURNAS and Centro Rio+, of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

“This glossary has the differential of being launched on the occasion of World Energy Day, which gives rise to a more in-depth discussion of the relationship between energy production and consumption with all the Sustainable Development Goals. The work represents the continuity of the partnership between the United Nations System in Brazil and the federal government for the implementation and transversalization of the Agenda 2030 in all government spheres and multiple interested sectors", says the resident coordinator of the UN System in Brazil and resident representative of the UNDP in the country, Niky Fabiancic.

To the Corporate Sustainability Manager at FURNAS, Lisangela Costa Reis, achieving sustainable development directly depends on energy production from renewable sources.

"Energy is a vital input for the development of societies, either by use in homes, in infrastructure or in industrial and commercial activities. Access to energy and development go together. Energy produced from renewable sources reduces pressure on the use of natural resources, allowing the next generations to also have the right to enjoy resources that make their development plan viable. Furthermore, clean energy ensures a healthy environment, by minimizing polluting emissions", he said.

Since the entry into force of the Agenda 2030, in 2015, the UN Advisory Group in Brazil has already released glossaries on the Sustainable Development Goals 5 (Gender equality), 13 (Action against global climate change), 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure) e 6 (Clean water and sanitation).

In the assessment of the UNDP Senior Advisor and Co-Chair of the Advisory Group, Haroldo Machado Filho, Presenting the definition of specific terms for each SDG is fundamental for the formulation of public policies with a focus on sustainable development.

"These glossaries constitute, therefore, Relevant tool to support the integrated understanding of the Agenda themes 2030. Learn about the concepts behind the commitment signed by countries at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015, is fundamental to inform policy formulation, in addition to guiding its implementation and monitoring over the next few years", defends ax.
