IUCN: The importance of biodiversity for business

A International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN, acronym in english) is the world's oldest and largest global environmental organization, and brings the conservation of biodiversity as its central mission, showing how fundamental this theme is to address some of the biggest challenges facing the world today, like climate change, the search for sustainable development and food security for the world population.

To take these principles, both regional and global scale, the IUCN is based on three main points. The science, counting on more than 11 a thousand specialists from the most diverse areas, acting in the implementation of global norms and standards, as well as alerts for critical situations. An example of this is the so-called red list of endangered species.. The action, with hundreds of conservation projects around the world, from actions at the local level to those involving several countries, always aiming at the sustainable management of biodiversity and natural resources. And its influence on international environmental conventions, policies and laws, all this through the collective strength of its members, that add up more than 1.200 governmental and non-governmental organizations.

In 2014, the organization released a guide in partnership with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, (WBCSD, acronym in english), showing how knowledge of the products can help in the evaluation, appreciation, management and reporting on the impacts and dependencies of companies on biodiversity, and in compliance with environmental standards and certification systems.

The guide focuses on four product knowledges: the red list of endangered species, the red list of ecosystems, key areas of biodiversity and planet protection, a database of protected areas. Read the guide in full on here,
