In day 07/05 last, a ANP, within the scope of the RenovaBio program, signed a technical cooperation agreement with Bonsucro, global non-profit organization, which aims to promote sustainable sugar cane. In the extract, the agreement will last for 36 months.
This agreement, aims to exchange experiences and knowledge about certifications, join efforts to improve both processes, promote integrated analysis of data from both and integrate the supervision processes of certification bodies and training for certifiers and producers.
After the conclusion of the agreement and implementation of the results, producers seeking both certifications will be able to undergo an integrated certification procedure, which should optimize audit efforts and reduce costs.
From now on, ANP and Bonsucro will form a team of experts to develop the integrated certification procedure, with the development of communication and training materials, in addition to seeking pilot audits to refine and establish the process.
From 2025, Companies seeking this unified certification will be able to participate in pilot procedures and public consultations, if you are interested in getting involved, Make sure you receive updates by subscribing to Bonsucro monthly newsletter.
Brazil and Sustainability – Sugar cane ethanol
Brazil is the world's largest producer of sugar cane, over 9,75 million hectares cultivated and an area harvested from 8,34 million hectares. Annually, the country produces more than 578 million tons of sugarcane, which places it as a global leader in ethanol production technology. In addition to being raw material for the production of sugar and alcohol, Sugar cane is also used for co-generation of electrical energy, manufacture of animal feed and fertilizer for crops.
It is worth highlighting that a technology is being developed in Brazil that allows ethanol to be obtained from the cellulose present in sugarcane bagasse (surplus energy production for the plant) and straw discarded at harvest. Only a third of the sugarcane, the broth, is used for the production of sugar and ethanol.
In terms of production, anhydrous ethanol from sugar cane, used in mixing with gasoline, had an increase of 8,5%, reaching 10,1 billion liters. The total hydrated ethanol from sugar cane must be in 23,9 billion liters, an increase of 3,7%.
With these expressive numbers, Brazil stands out in the global biofuels market, reinforcing its privileged position in the production of ethanol from sugar cane
The Bonsucro Program
Bonsucro certification is a global initiative that promotes the sustainable production of sugar cane and its derivatives. Setting rigorous standards for responsible production, This certification considers not only environmental aspects, but also social and economic.
There are two types of Bonsucro certification:
- Production Standard: This standard helps farmers and mills measure their productivity, as well as its main environmental and social impacts. Can be used by all sugarcane mills and rural properties to demonstrate their sustainable production, regardless of its size. Companies that use the Bonsucro Production Standard are able to increase their efficiency, decrease energy use, reduce water consumption, minimize waste, create a safe work environment and increase your market viability.
- Chain of Custody Standard: This standard allows brands to trace sugar cane from its origin to the final product. It allows brands to declare that the sugar cane they buy from suppliers is sustainable. The Chain of Custody Standard covers all stages of supplying a product, from the production of its raw material to its consumption. It demonstrates responsible suppliers, ethical marketing, ensuring compliance and greater supply chain visibility.
For power plants, Bonsucro certification offers several benefits, as new ways of measuring performance, demonstrating commitment to sustainability to employees and buyers, in addition to attracting and retaining human talent. Now for buyers, Chain of Custody certification helps you understand the supply chain, reduce risks, improve reputation and meet sustainable sourcing goals with credibility.
ANP and RenovaBio
RenovaBio is Brazil's National Biofuels Policy, established by Law no. 13.576/2017. Its main objectives are:
- Contribute to Brazil's commitments in the Paris Agreement: RenovaBio aims to provide an important contribution to fulfilling the commitments determined by Brazil under the Paris Agreement, especially in relation to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
- Promote the expansion of biofuels in the energy matrix: The program seeks to encourage the use of biofuels, such as ethanol and biodiesel, as more sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels. This includes the adequate expansion of the production of these biofuels, with emphasis on regular supply.
- Ensure predictability for the fuel market: RenovaBio seeks to create a predictable environment for the fuel market, inducing energy efficiency gains and emissions reductions throughout the entire production chain, commercialization and use of biofuels.
To achieve these goals, the program uses tools such as certification of production or efficient import of biofuels, establishes emission reduction targets in the fuel matrix, creates decarbonization credit (CBIO) and makes the CBIO platform available for transactions of these credits. RenovaBio is essential for driving the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy matrix in Brazil.
Primary Data in the RenovaBio context
With the agreements signed between the Alcohol and Energy Production Industry, represented by Bioenergia Brasil and União da Industria de Cana de Açúcar e Bioenergia (UNIQUE) and between sugar cane producers and suppliers, represented by the Federation of Sugarcane Planters (FEPLANA), the Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock (CNA), in addition to other associations, The way is opened for voting on the Bill 3.149/20 in the Chamber of Deputies, which guarantees the transfer, according to the agreement, from 60% of net revenue from CBios by the plant to producers who supply sugarcane as standard, while for those who certify themselves with primary data (with specific profile), the transfer will be a minimum of 85% of additional net revenue generated compared to the standard profile.
In this way, sugar cane producers and suppliers will have, from now on, every incentive to collect Primary Data from the RenovaBio program and have access to CBios from the certified production chain. We give biO3 Consulting We have the expertise to help producers obtain these parameters and benefit from these agreements, advancing legislation and reaping the fruits of this moment of integration, which will certainly be a movement highly sought after by the market in the coming months and years.
