Emissions grow in the country for the second consecutive year; agricultural sector leads

Agricultural activity responded by shocking 74% of the country's emissions, and the deforestation caused by this activity, by myself, answered by 51% of the total national emissions.

Brazilian emissions of greenhouse gases rose 8,9% last year driven by increased deforestation. With that they arrived at 2,28 billion gross tons of CO2, against 2,09 billions in 2015, the highest level since 2008. The increase is the second in a row: in 2015 had already grown up 3,4% in relation to 2014.

This happened in the midst of the economic crisis, that, expected, would lead to your downfall. The accumulated elevation in 2015 e 2016 was from 12,3%, against an accumulated drop of 7,4 pontos no PIB. According to the organizers of the Emissions Estimation System (SEEG) of the Climate Observatory, O “Brazil is the only major economy in the world to increase pollution without generating wealth for your society”.

Agricultural activity responded by shocking 74% of emissions in the country, and the deforestation caused by this activity, by myself, answered by 51% of the total of nationals. In contrast, the energy sector reduced its emissions in 7,3%.

According to SEEG, if it was a country, Brazilian agriculture would be the eighth biggest polluter on the planet, with gross volume of 1,6 billion tons of CO2.

About the results, the professor of international relations at UnB, Eduardo Viola, said that “tragically, we arrived in 2017, again to the amazing figure of 11 tons of CO2 per capita equivalents, higher than that of almost all European countries., the vast majority of which have a per capita income between 2 e 5 times the one in Brazil. The carbon intensity of GDP (GDP divided by emissions) is again at aberrant levels for an upper-middle-income country like Brazil".
