Brazilian biomes

Brazil is formed by six biomes with distinct characteristics: amazon, Caatinga, Closed, Atlantic forest, Pampa and Pantanal.

Each of these environments is home to different types of vegetation and fauna.

As vegetation is one of the most important components of the biota, their state of conservation and continuity define the existence or not of habitats for the species., the maintenance of environmental services and the provision of essential goods for the survival of human populations.

For the perpetuation of life in biomes, it is necessary to establish environmental public policies, identifying opportunities for conservation, sustainable use and benefit-sharing of biodiversity.Amazon biome

It is in force to Ordinance No. 151/2016, establishing the Consultative Council of the National Program for Monitoring the Coverage and Use of Lands in Brazilian Biomes and, yet, appoints the members to make up the General Coordination, the Technical Coordination Committee and the Advisory Board of this program designed to monitor Brazilian biomes.

The Program aims to map and monitor deforestation, evaluate vegetation cover and land use and cover and its dynamics, the burns, selective logging and vegetation recovery.

In a wider sphere, this information will serve to support decision-making in actions aimed at promoting the conservation of Brazilian biodiversity.

Also to provide a strategic vision of territorial management that combines the various interests in land use and still allows the country's development on a sustainable basis.

To the director of the Department of Ecosystems of the Ministry of the Environment, Carlos Alberto Scaramuzza, “the formalization of the Technical Coordination Committee and the Advisory Board is an important step towards materializing the ambitious goals of the Environmental Monitoring Program for Brazilian Biomes, launched in 5 of May".

The Coordination bodies of the Environmental Monitoring Program for Brazilian Biomes were created by MMA Ordinance No. 365/2015, to be exercised by the Executive Secretariat of the MMA.

This same ordinance created, also, the technical and scientific coordination instance of the Program, called the Technical Coordination Committee, to be exercised by the Secretariat of Biodiversity and Forests and by the Secretariat of Climate Change and Environmental Quality of the MMA.
