Five solutions to the problem of garbage in cities

After the start of the industrial revolution, humanity began a process of valuing non-durable consumer goods, what made people generate more and more daily waste. In recent decades, the amount of accumulated garbage has tripled, with tons of disposal scattered in dumps and without receiving proper treatment.

Only a few years ago the issue of garbage began to be seriously debated around the world., and in the country, with the creation of National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS) and a law that prohibits the maintenance of open-air dumps. Although the deadline for solving these problems was up to 2014, there are still many deposits scattered in large urban centers.

the big problem of garbage

The dumps in big cities are one of the biggest urban problems, capable of causing environmental damage, social and political in frightening dimensions. in these places, garbage is dumped by collection trucks directly onto the ground, that does not receive any protection or technical care.

The act appears to be harmless, but it turns the place into a breeding ground for the most varied insects and rodents, capable of transmitting many serious diseases. Nonetheless, it is in the decomposition of organic matter thrown into the soil that its main damage resides: the garbage produces an acidic and fetid liquid called slurry, that infiltrates not only and sub-only, reaching groundwater and irreversibly contaminating the entire region.

Garbage is also capable of producing the methane gas that, in addition to contaminating the soil, It is one of main agents of the greenhouse effect and twenty-one times more harmful to the air than carbon dioxide.

Dumpsters attract many people looking for work, in the role of garbage collectors. They look for any material that can be reused for recycling. These people who act directly on waste are always subject to contamination, including for not using any safety equipment..

The solutions are numerous, just choose…

The rule of the five Rs of sustainability is widely used for those who focus on reducing waste production in a qualified and effective way. They are present in reducing, re-use, Recycle, refuse and rethink, since it is necessary to start a change of habits in society as urgently as possible..

The first goal is to reduce the amount of waste produced, prioritizing products that can be reusable. Then use the product to the full, delaying its disposal as much as possible, including through the repair. It's a different way of dealing with consumer culture.

Check below some of the possible solutions to minimize the problem of garbage in big cities:

Technological landfills

The proposal is that the waste itself fights itself through processes that accelerate the decomposition of organic waste. Among the garbage discarded on site, soft drinks and beers that were also discarded for being out of date are dumped, and the product gas is able to make decomposition much faster than the expected average.

Biodigestão

Biodigestion is the creation of fuel through the use of discarded organic waste. Plants collect this type of waste and are able to produce clean fuel.

Carbon credit

This is a way to generate income for the future, since it distributes pipes capable of capturing the gases emitted by waste. This gas can be recovered and treated to generate energy.

Incineration

Its role is in the burning of discarded waste, but it can be more complex as it requires a more complex structure for reusing the recovered gas.

The garbage that turns asphalt

Hospital waste and heavy metals present a very high risk of contamination. But it is possible to transform it into other products, without offering risk of contagion. All because these materials are transformed into small grades that can become asphalt.
