ELO program, Bonsucro and comparison between sustainable production standards

Recently the SAI platform (Sustainable Agriculture Initiative Platform) officially recognized the ELO Program, one of the current standards of sustainable production, and root, integrated energy company, internationally validating the company's commitment to a socially fair and environmentally correct production model.

created in 2014, the ELO Program is an unprecedented voluntary initiative in the sugarcane production chain in the world. It is, aims to promote sustainable development with its sugarcane producers, certifying them with 34 environmental sustainability criteria, social and economic. Its objective is to engage sugarcane suppliers in the progressive adoption of measures that encourage the promotion of economic sustainability, respect for the environment, human and labor rights.

The name of the program indicates the work to strengthen Raízen's supply chain links, mostly made up of sugarcane producers. Therefore, seeks continuous improvement of commodity suppliers, considering good practices, economic sustainability, environmental and social, concern with market demands and risk reduction. Furthermore, deals with business continuity and protecting the image of the supplier and Raízen.

The role of biO3

However, it can be observed that the ELO presents similarities in principles and objectives with other standards focused on sustainability, as the Bonsucro certification standard. Thus, through the consultancy work of biO3 environment and sustainability, the comparison between the two standards was performed, following Bonsucro's benchmarking protocol, for proper alignment and assessment of the level of adherence between sustainability schemes. Alignment can be presented at three levels, basic, intermediate and comprehensive, indicating how comparable the scheme is with the Bonsucro Production Standard. It was concluded that the two schemes in question showed an intermediate alignment.

Therefore, with ELO recognition and comparisons with other sustainability schemes in the sugar-energy sector, emphasis is placed on the theme of sustainable development. Encourages the adoption of sustainable practices for sugarcane producers, and fostering the creation of sustainable production patterns, aiming to align with large schemes and mobilizing producers for an increasingly sustainable chain.
