A Review of BonSucro V5.2 – Final Part

In this BonSucro V5.2 Review, we highlight some of the principles of the main indicators that the company must comply with to obtain Bonsucro certification:

  • Assessment and Prioritization of Environmental Risks, Social and Human Rights. The company must carry out an updated assessment of the risks in its operations, including direct and indirect impacts, and prioritize actions to mitigate them.
  • Water Management. The company must monitor water use in its operations and implement measures to reduce consumption. The company must have a water management plan that includes targets for reducing consumption and measures to achieve them.
  • Greenhouse Gas Emissions. The company must calculate its greenhouse gas emissions (GEE) and implement measures to reduce emissions. The company must have a GHG emissions management plan that includes reduction targets and measures to achieve them.
  • Occupational Health and Safety. The company must implement an occupational health and safety management program (SSO) to prevent work accidents and occupational diseases. The company must have an OH&S plan that includes improvement goals and measures to achieve them.
  • Work conditions. The company must ensure that workers in its operations have decent working conditions, including fair wages, access to drinking water and basic sanitation, protection against child and forced labor, and freedom of association and collective bargaining. The company must have an action plan to ensure that all its operations comply with decent working conditions requirements.
  • Traceability. The company must have a traceability system to ensure that the sugar cane used in production meets the requirements of the Bonsucro standard. The company must have an action plan to ensure that its traceability system is effective and reliable.
  • Biodiversity Conservation. The company must identify and protect areas of high conservation (HCV) and areas of high carbon value (HCS) in its operations. The company must avoid converting native forests and other natural ecosystems to sugarcane production. The company must have a biodiversity conservation plan that includes goals and measures to preserve biological diversity.
  • Relationship with Stakeholders. The company must establish and maintain a constructive dialogue with relevant stakeholders, including local communities, civil society organizations, public authorities, suppliers and customers. The company must identify and meet the expectations and concerns of interested parties, as well as informing them about their activities and performance. The company must have a stakeholder relationship plan that includes goals and measures to improve communication and collaboration.

Statement two 37 (thirty seven) Essential Indicators:

1.1.1 The operator develops and implements a Sustainability Management Plan to comply with the Bonsucro Production Standard.

1.2.1 Operator maps internal stakeholders, external and vulnerable parties and prepares an Engagement Plan for these parties.

1.2.2 The operator carries out a risk assessment in accordance with the Bonsucro Production Standard.

1.2.3 The operator conducts and documents an improvement opportunity assessment outside the certification unit.

1.2.4 The operator develops and implements a Continuous Improvement Plan to support sugarcane suppliers in addressing the most relevant opportunities identified outside the certification unit.

1.3.1 The operator has an established system to ensure compliance with all local laws and regulations, national and international ratified

1.3.2 The operator respects the terms of the contract for sugarcane-related payments.

1.4.1 The operator ensures that internal monitoring processes are conducted, corrective actions are implemented and a management review is performed.

1.4.2 The operator ensures that there is a mechanism for submitting complaints.

2.1.1 The operator ensures that the main health and safety hazards and risks (S&S) for all workers in the facilities included in the certification unit are identified, documented, evaluated and communicated to all workers.

2.1.2 The operator manages the hazards and risks of S&S for all workers in the facilities included in the certification unit through implemented and executed plans.

2.1.3 The operator ensures that all workers in the facilities included in the certification unit have access to drinking water and adequate sanitary facilities.

2.1.4. The operator ensures that all workers at the facilities included in the certification unit have free access to personal protective equipment (EPI) suitable.

2.1.6 The operator ensures that first aid and emergency response are available to all workers at the facilities included in the certification unit.

2.2.1 The operator guarantees that all workers at the facilities included in the certification unit have a contract.

2.2.2 The operator ensures that the number of hours worked in the agricultural unit and the plant complies with national legislation for all workers in the facilities included in the certification unit.

2.2.3 The operator ensures that overtime is paid at a premium rate for all workers in the facilities included in the certification unit.

2.2.4 The operator ensures that all workers at the facilities included in the certification unit receive, at least, the legal minimum wage, including benefits.

2.2.5 The operator ensures that workers paid for productivity are guaranteed at least the minimum wage, including benefits, for all workers in the facilities included in the certification unit.

2.3.1 The operator ensures that workers do not suffer discrimination, including all workers in the facilities included in the certification unit.

2.3.2 The operator ensures that workers are not abused, harassment and/or violence, including all workers in the facilities included in the certification unit.

2.3.3 The operator ensures that workers do not suffer situations of forced labor, including all workers in the facilities included in the certification unit.

2.3.4 The operator guarantees the absence of child labor, for all people who are on the premises of the certification unit, regardless of whether they are employed by the operator or not.

2.3.5 When the operator or its subcontractors provide accommodation to workers, the operator ensures that the facilities meet minimum safety standards for all workers in the facilities included in the certification unit.

2.4.1 The operator ensures that the rights to freedom of association and collective bargaining of all workers in the facilities included in the certification unit are respected, interference-free.

2.5.2 The operator demonstrates that it is taking steps to address legitimate land and water claims in accordance with applicable legal processes.

3.2.1 The operator performs a climate risk assessment and ensures that a Climate Change Mitigation and Resilience Plan is established and implemented.

4.1.2 – The operator develops and implements a Biodiversity Management Plan (PMB).

4.1.3 The operator guarantees that areas of legally protected natural ecosystems (nationally or internationally), or areas classified as HCV, were not converted to sugarcane cultivation as of January 1, 2008.

4.1.4 The operator guarantees that areas of natural ecosystems (legally protected or not), or areas classified as HCV, were not converted to agriculture as of January 1, 2021.

4.2.2 – The operator develops and implements a Soil Management Plan (PMS).

4.2.4 The operator applies the amount of fertilizer recommended by soil or leaf analysis.

4.3.2 – The operator develops and implements a Water Management Plan (WSP for its acronym in English).

4.4.2 – The operator implements an Integrated Pest Management plan (Plano MIP).

4.4.3 The operator maximizes the efficiency of applied agrochemicals.

4.4.4 The operator only applies legal and safe agrochemicals.

4.5.1 Operator safely manages storage facilities and safely disposes of chemicals, fuels, lubricants, other hazardous materials and their containers.
