The circular economy seeks to break the link between economic activity of consumption and finite resources, eliminate the waste generated, in addition to being supported by a transition to renewable energy sources. is based on: eliminate waste and pollution from the beginning; keep products and materials in use; and regenerate natural systems. In this way, shifting to a circular economy creates economic and business opportunity and provides environmental and social benefits.

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation

Founded in 2010, has the mission of accelerating the transition towards a circular economy. Works with global companies, philanthropic organizations and governments through an interdisciplinary approach. is present in 25 countries across Latin America, North America, Asia and Europe.

In order to reinforce the importance and purpose behind a transition to the circular economy, the foundation develops research in key thematic areas. the city of São Paulo

São Paulo is the first city to sign a strategic partnership with the Foundation. Aiming to scale up circular economy solutions in the city, intends to face economic development and climate change. The agreement will bring together various agencies and municipal authorities to build an efficient approach to achieving the goals, between them: Municipal Agency for Urban Cleaning (AMLURB), Municipal Secretariat for Green and the Environment (SVMA), Municipal Secretariat for Economic Development, Work and Tourism (SMDET) and others.

Nonetheless, this is not the first time the city and the foundation have collaborated with each other.. The city was among the first to sign the Global Commitment for a New Plastics Economy and also passed a municipal law to phase out problematic and single-use plastics.. In addition, the foundation contributes to efforts to localize the Sustainable Development Goals (ODS) in the city.

To the foundation's CEO, Andrew Morlet, the attitude of São Paulo may "inspire other cities in the region and in the world to raise their level of ambition". Remember that São Paulo is the largest city in Latin America, and by demonstrating this high level of commitment can bring big changes to the environment..
